the boston 100k artscience innovation prize

The Boston 100K ArtScience Innovation Prize is an urban teen empowerment program of ArtScience Labs, an international network of creator organizations founded by the writer and creator David Edwards. The ArtScience Prize provides exciting opportunities for urban teens to learn through passionate development of breakthrough ideas in the arts and design, at the frontier of scientific knowledge. Through a curricular and mentoring model based on that of the Idea Translation Lab, urban high school students form teams around innovative "seed ideas" provided by an international jury of artists, designers, entrepreneurs, and scientists.

During the course of a school year participating teens refine their ideas, take ownership of the idea development process, and develop idea translation proposals for public presentation. The Idea Translation Lab provides networking and educational resources to participating teens and, working with the ArtScience Prize Jury, selects a group of finalist teams to receive funding up to a total of $100,000 to further pursue realization of their ideas. The First Prize winning team will also be awarded support to travel to Paris to participate in an Idea Translation Lab Workshop at Le Laboratoire, an art and design innovation center in Central Paris. Here they will meet and work with students from cities around the world, and with artists and designers working on other artscience innovation projects. In Paris the winning team will develop their idea further, possibly leading to new art exhibitions, new commercial products, or new social interventions. ArtScience Prize participants who do not receive the First Prize are offered other kinds of resources, including summer work opportunities, and access to opportunities for training in the arts and design.

Through the ArtScience Prize high school students learn to learn by pursuing an idea with passion, and discover that when learning carries them across the institutional boundaries between art and science, they often learn most.
